Praying in Jesus Name

Praying in Jesus Name

And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15)

Power, alignment, authority in praying in Jesus’ name is unpacked in John 14:13-14, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”  As this is a profound invitation, some misapply this verse, thinking that saying “in Jesus’ name” at the end of a prayer results in God acting like a genie in a bottle granting what is asked for. This is essentially treating the surrender, proclamation and declaration of “in Jesus’ name” as a magic formula. Not only is treating Him like a genie unbiblical it actually disempowers what Jesus has empowering.

Praying in Jesus’ name means praying with His authority, power, principles and will.  We are asking  the Father to respond to our prayers because we come in the name of His Son, Jesus. God the Father sees Jesus in you. Praying in Jesus’ name means you are in agreement, according to the will of God, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15). Praying in Jesus’ name is praying from the position we hold in Him, therefore we pray for things that will honor and glorify Jesus as that becomes our greatest desire.

Saying “in Jesus’ name” at the end of a prayer is not a footnote or magic formula. If what we pray is not for God’s glory and according to His will, saying “in Jesus’ name” is not going to sanctify it. Authentically praying in Jesus’ name and for His glory is beautiful, not attaching certain words to the end of a prayer. The profound good news is this is not hard to do, nor is it a fancy way of praying. Simply hop up on the mercy seat and talk to God, in Jesus name. No need for saying the “right” words, check in with your heart as you gaze upon the one you are talking to. Praying in agreement with God’s will is at the heart of praying in Jesus’ name.

Oh, to make this even more amazing…His will is for you to talk to Him, to lean in, to receive, to hear, trust and partner…all the things we love to do when we encounter Him…in Jesus name 🙌
